Shrimp Gumbo Recipe
This classic Cajun Louisiana dish is spicy and truly delicious.
Ingredients:
1/2 Cup Vegetable Oil
1/2 Cup All-Purpose Flour
1 large Onion, chopped
1/2 Cup Fresh Parsley, chopped
1/2 Cup Celery, chopped
1/2 Cup Green Onions, sliced
6 Garlic Cloves, minced
4 Cups Chicken Broth (or Water)
1 (10 oz.) package Frozen Okra, sliced & thawed
1 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. Ground Red Pepper
2 lbs. medium Raw Shrimp, peeled and deveined
3 Cups Hot Cooked Rice
Fresh Parsley Sprigs for garnish
Directions:
In a large pot over medium heat, blend the oil and flour and let it cook for 10 to 15 minutes, or it’s dark brown, stirring often.
Add the celery, parsley, onion, garlic, and green onions and cook for 5 to 10 minutes. Then add the broth, okra, salt, and red pepper, cover the pot and let simmer for 15 minutes.
Add the shrimp and let it simmer for another 3 to 5 minutes, until they turn pink and opaque.
Spoon the rice equally into 8 soup bowls and top with the gumbo. Garnish with parsley.
